Since German reunification, the Christian Democratic CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democrats (SPD) have dominated German politics. These two mass parties (Volkspartei) have formed governing coalitions at the federal level and dominated polls. Although recent years have seen an erosion in their popularity, in their heydays both could exceed 35 percent of the vote, and their combined total often reached two-thirds of the vote.
