PM Modi Welcomes Fresh Round of GST Reforms

The council said 90% of refunds will be sanctioned within three days, while prosecution thresholds rise and GST officers lose arrest powers.

  • On Thursday, the 57th GST Council Meeting concluded with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announcing major reforms. The Council removed tax officers' arrest powers and raised the prosecution threshold fivefold to Rs 5 crore.
  • Part of the 'Next-Gen GST' initiative, these changes aim to improve compliance and simplify procedures for businesses. Minister Sitharaman stated the reforms address taxpayers' long-standing grievances regarding harassment, registration difficulties, and delayed refunds.
  • To improve refund efficiency, the Council reduced the acknowledgment period from 15 days to 10 days, with 90 per cent of claims sanctioned within three days. Additionally, registration processes for new offices are now automated.
  • Service exporters will now receive benefits for work done through overseas branches, while the Council introduced common standards for notices. No notices will be issued for tax disputes below the Rs 10,000 threshold.
  • All approved reforms will come into force from April 1, 2027. Sitharaman noted that 99% of GST process and rate reforms are now complete, with the Council focusing on maintaining momentum for India's growth.
