Holiday Flights Major Update as 'up to 500 Portugal Flights Could Be Axed'
Officials warned holidaymakers to make contingency plans as staff absences of up to 79% could hit TAP Air Portugal and other carriers.
On Wednesday, June 3, airline cabin crew, rail staff and public transport workers across Portugal are set to walk out in protest at proposed government reforms, with industry estimates suggesting as many as 500 flights could be cancelled.
The CGTP issued formal notification of the general strike after unsuccessful negotiations with Government officials over amendments to employment legislation. The Federation of Transport and Communications Unions confirmed backing across Lisbon Metro, Carris, Transtejo/Soflusa, Fertagus, Mondego Metro, Porto Metro, STCP and CP.
TAP Air Portugal faces staff absences of up to 79 per cent across mainline and regional operations Portuglia and SATA, with Ryanair and easyJet also bracing for shortages. EasyJet assured customers it is "doing everything in its power to minimise the impact of this strike."
Carriers TAP and SATA are permitting passengers to reschedule flights scheduled for June 3 without additional charges. The Portuguese Hotel and Restaurant Association appealed for immediate suspension of the European Union Entry/Exit System through September, which the group said would "speed up passenger checks and reduce waiting times at airports."
The Civil Aviation Pilots' Union opted out of the strike, with President Hélder Santinhos stating next week's industrial action "does not seem to be at the most appropriate time" due to insufficient labour package changes. Settlements remain possible before any walkout commences.
