Portugal police detain French woman suspected of abandoning two children
Police said the pair are suspected of domestic violence and child abandonment after the boys were found crying with backpacks but no identity documents.
- On Thursday, National Republican Guard officers arrested the 41-year-old mother of two French children and her 55-year-old partner in Fatima, following a manhunt on suspicion of abuse, endangerment, and abandonment.
- The children, both under five, were found abandoned near Alcacer do Sal on Tuesday after being reported missing from Colmar, France, around 10 days ago by their father.
- After finding the children, motorist Alexandre Quintas took them to a bakery, telling Observador, "We asked them if they liked ice cream," while providing food and toys to keep them occupied.
- Police are investigating the couple for domestic violence, exposure to danger, and abandonment, though authorities in Portugal and France have not reached any conclusions at this stage.
- The couple were arrested in Fatima, about 180km north of Alcacer do Sal, after local media reported spotting them outside a cafe in the central town.
