Porter Airlines betting travellers will embrace Montreal’s second airport
Porter says the South Shore hub could handle 4 million passengers a year as bookings exceed expectations, with 138 weekly flights planned.
Today, Porter Airlines launches commercial service from the new terminal at Montreal Metropolitan Airport in Longueuil, with a water salute greeting the first arriving aircraft.
Partnering with infrastructure partner Macquarie, Porter transformed the former Saint-Hubert Airport into Montreal Metropolitan Airport to capture South Shore travelers seeking an alternative to existing hubs.
Operating 138 weekly flights, the airline connects to 11 Canadian destinations including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto, with annual capacity of four million passengers.
Porter chief executive Michael Deluce described the facility as "Billy Bishop on steroids," arguing its location offers travelers a convenient alternative to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, and noted bookings have exceeded expectations.
The carrier predicts the airport could become one of the busiest in Canada within two years, though transportation experts caution that shifting established travel habits may take time.
The first commercial aircraft at the new airport terminal, located at Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET) in Longueuil, flew Monday morning to multiple destinations in Canada. Press attended.
