B.C. Man Sentenced for Killing Neighbour’s Dog

Michael Stini received probation and a fine after admitting he shot a neighbour’s dog trapped in a foot-hold trap, the BC SPCA said.

  • Michael Stini, a Port Alberni man, pleaded guilty on June 10 to injuring or endangering animals after shooting and killing his neighbor's dog, Stone, while the animal was immobilized in a foot-hold trap on February 23, 2023.
  • Prior to the incident, Stini had reported cougar attacks on his livestock to the Conservation Officer Service, which set foot-hold traps on his farm and explicitly instructed him not to shoot or kill any trapped animals.
  • Conservation officers were en route to release Stone from the traps when they arrived at the property and found the dog deceased by gunshot; investigations revealed Stone had not approached the livestock.
  • Following his guilty plea, Stini received a conditional discharge and 12 months of probation, along with a $2,500 fine and $250 in restitution ordered by the court.
  • Kaley Pugh, regional manager of cruelty investigations with the BC SPCA, noted that The Livestock Protection Act permits lethal protection only if a dog is actively attacking or viciously pursuing livestock.
