E. Coli Cases Possibly Linked to Bengtson's Pumpkin Farm, Will County Health Officials Say
The farm closed its petting zoo and is arranging animal testing as health officials investigate whether contact with animals spread the bacteria.
On Friday, the Will County Health Department announced it is investigating five laboratory-confirmed cases of STEC possibly linked to visits to Bengtson's Pumpkin Farm in Homer Glen.
STEC spreads through contaminated food, water, surfaces, or animal contact, and the bacteria can persist even when animals appear healthy, according to the Health Department.
Environmental Health Director Sean Conners said the Pumpkin Farm has been "fully cooperative," closing its petting zoo as a precaution while arranging for animal testing.
Officials are asking anyone who visited the Pumpkin Farm since Sept. 29 and experienced symptoms to complete a confidential online survey to assist the investigation.
Symptoms typically develop one to 10 days after exposure, while children younger than 5 and older adults face a greater risk of severe illness.
