Pope Leo will not need further therapy after his operation, doctors say
Doctors said the tumor was localized and a follow-up oncological evaluation found no need for chemotherapy or radiation.
On Oct 21, The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV requires no further cancer treatment after successful surgery earlier this month. The bulletin confirmed the pulmonary adenocarcinoma was localized.
Pope Leo returned to The Vatican four days ago, after surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung during the procedure earlier this month.
Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora said "the final histological reports and molecular biology analyses of the tissue removed during the Holy Father's surgery have been completed today." The oncological evaluation confirmed no further therapy is required.
Resuming his duties, Pope Leo held his weekly general audience at The Vatican on Oct 21, marking his return to public appearances following the successful medical procedure.
Medical experts confirmed the cancer was pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. With no additional treatment necessary, The Vatican indicated the Holy Father's recovery is progressing as anticipated.
