Pope could soon decide fate of Spain bishop accused of abuse, under investigation by church
Bishop Rafael Zornoza is under a canonical investigation for alleged sexual abuse from the 1990s; his resignation at age 75 may be accepted by Pope Leo XIV soon.
- On Monday, Pope Leo XIV could soon accept the resignation of Cádiz Bishop Rafael Zornoza, 76, who is under a canonical church investigation opened two weeks ago, Archbishop Luis Javier Argüello García said.
- Earlier this month, El País reported a former seminarian's letter to the Vatican alleging Zornoza fondled him and regularly slept with him from ages 14-21 while directing the Getafe seminary.
- The Diocese of Cádiz said on Nov. 10 that it denied the accusations as "very serious and also false," confirmed the Rota, church court in Madrid, is investigating, and Zornoza is cooperating while undergoing cancer treatment.
- Argüello suggested Pope Leo XIV could soon accept Rafael Zornoza's resignation and name a temporary replacement amid the Spanish Catholic Church's reckoning in recent years.
- The case comes amid a national reckoning in recent years that includes a 2023 probe with an 18-month investigation and compensation plans by the Spanish government and Catholic hierarchy.
