Polymarket removes contract allowing users to wager on fate of Cornell students accused of rape
The platform said it removed the contract after critics called it dehumanizing and survivors' groups objected to betting on a sexual assault case.
On Tuesday, Polymarket removed a betting contract that allowed users to wager on whether men accused of sexual assault at Cornell would face felony charges, following significant public backlash.
Available since September 30, the market generated more than $450,000 in volume and centered on allegations involving seven fraternity members sued last month by a woman identified as Jane Doe.
Online critics questioned celebrity endorsers, including NBA star LeBron James, Derek Jeter, and Eli Manning, for associating with the company, leading to an online petition calling on them to cut ties.
A Polymarket spokesperson stated Tuesday that the company removed the market after hearing public concerns, despite believing in the "wisdom of crowds" regarding data-driven insight.
Other speculative markets remain active on Polymarket's platform, including one with more than $10,700 in volume tracking whether Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff will remain through October 31.
