Poll shows rising trust in global institutions, less comfort with US as global leader

Trust in the World Health Organization rose to 69% and support for global cooperation held at 57%, the Rockefeller Foundation said.

  • A Rockefeller Foundation poll of over 35,000 people across 34 countries released today shows rising trust in international institutions, yet respondents expressed less comfort with The United States and China taking global leadership roles.
  • Nearly 70% of respondents feel the world has worsened over the past year, as conflict in the Middle East following the February 28 war between the United States, Israel, and Iran upended energy markets and fueled inflation.
  • Trust in the World Health Organization rose to 69% from 61%, the United Nations to 62% from 58%, and the World Bank to 55% from 46%, while Canada received the highest comfort level for global leadership at 60%.
  • Eric Pelofsky, vice-president of the Rockefeller Foundation, stated the poll results show the 'middle powers' approach championed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has global credibility, as just 39% support United States leadership.
  • Ahead of next week's United Nations General Assembly, 57% of those surveyed said nations should cooperate to solve global security challenges even if it requires compromising on some national interests.
