DECRYPTAGE - Voted on Tuesday by MEPs, against the government's opinion, the miraculous solution that would bring in €26 billion a year is almost impossible to implement in France.
At first reading, MEPs approved by an overwhelming majority an amendment by France to impose more on large foreign groups and another from Renaissance doubling the digital services tax, both of which could raise more than EUR 20 billion.
This amendment, carried by La France insoumée, was strongly criticized by the deputies of the central bloc and LR.
An amendment tabled by the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Éric Coquerel, was supported by the left and the National Rally (207 for, 89 against). This "universal tax" on multinationals could bring 26 billion euros to the state budget, according to its defenders.
The votes of the left and the RN united on Tuesday 28 October in the Assembly to approve an amendment tabled by France unsolicited. It could raise 26 billion euros to the state budget.
MEPs have very broadly approved an amendment by France, against the government's opinion, to tax the profits of multinationals in proportion to their activities carried out in France.
