Police say Chicago suburb suspect in alleged mass shooting plot had white supremacy manifesto
Police say the 19-year-old suspect had a manifesto, rifle and ammunition, and investigators believe he planned to target Indian Americans.
On Sunday, police in Palatine, Illinois, arrested 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis for allegedly planning a mass shooting targeting a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, about 30 km west of Chicago.
Investigators recovered a document titled "Why I Fought: A.K.A.: " expressing white supremacist ideologies with references to violence against individuals of Indian descent, police said.
A concerned co-worker alerted authorities after Paporakis shared images of tactical equipment; police subsequently seized an AR-style rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a tactical vest with white supremacist imagery.
Paporakis appeared for a detention hearing on Wednesday where a judge ordered him held on charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi stated he was "horrified that a white supremacist allegedly attempted to massacre Indian Americans."
The Indian American Advocacy Council urged the FBI and Department of Justice to intensify scrutiny of online hate influencers, warning that online hate against South Asians has surged 240% between January 2024 and June 2026.
