Kingston Market Fire Destroys Stalls and Forces Closure of Square for Foreseeable Future
Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters responded as flames destroyed several stalls, while police said the cause remains under investigation.
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, a fire swept through Kingston Market Place in London during early morning hours, destroying several market stalls before London Fire Brigade crews brought it under control by 6:08am.
Kingston Ancient Market, a historic trading location dating to the early 1200s, has been operated by Between The Bridges since April 1, 2025, with the operator having submitted revamp plans to Kingston Council.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at 4:33am, with eight people evacuated as a precaution and no injuries reported.
The Brigade and Metropolitan Police launched a joint investigation into the fire's cause while the Market Place remained cordoned off; Kirsch stated the council was "prioritise the recovery of our much-loved market."
A spokesperson for All Saints Church, located between the market and the Bentall Centre, praised emergency crews' "tireless, brave efforts" that prevented the fire from fully taking hold of surrounding buildings.
