Ugandan activist alleges she was raped while in Tanzanian detention
- Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire was tortured, sexually assaulted, and smeared with excrement by Tanzanian security forces after her arrest in Dar es Salaam on Monday while attending opposition leader Tundu Lissu's trial.
- Her detention followed warnings by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan against foreign activists, whom she accused of attempting to interfere in Tanzania's affairs amid upcoming October elections.
- Atuhaire and Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi were blindfolded, chained, and subjected to brutal beatings and humiliations such as being filmed to instil fear, while Mwangi struggled to walk upon release to Nairobi.
- The US State Department and Amnesty International expressed deep concern and called for urgent investigations into the reported torture and mistreatment of Atuhaire and Mwangi, while Tanzanian authorities gave no response.
- Atuhaire stated she feels no shame and will file a formal complaint against Tanzania, emphasizing the need for justice over shame despite enduring severe physical and psychological trauma.
