Lagos Police Detain Officer for Allegedly Gunning Down One, Injuring Another in Ajegunle

The officer has been disarmed and detained as investigators review a police response to a clash that left one girl dead and another injured.

  • On Thursday, ASP Omotayo Olajide discharged his firearm in Ajegunle during a police operation, killing teenage girl Omole Taiwo and injuring another. The second victim remains in stable condition at a hospital.
  • Officers were deployed to the Nosamu area between 9.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday after receiving a distress call regarding a violent toll-collection clash between the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys.
  • Olajide has been disarmed and detained, with the Lagos State Police Command transferring the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department. "Inquiry will establish exactly what happened and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary action," the Command added.
  • Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai visited the bereaved family to offer condolences, while the Command assured the public that no officer found culpable in the shooting would be protected.
  • This incident recalls an April 2019 shooting in Ajegunle where inspector Dania Ojo killed 20-year-old Ada Ifeanyi. In February, two passersby also died during a police operation in Alagbado, highlighting a pattern of fatal police incidents.
