‘Polarized’ world is fuelling a growing number of protests in Canada, police say
Canada has seen a 75% rise in protests between Jan. 2025 and Jan. 2026 as global issues and social media mobilize large diaspora-led demonstrations, police say.
- On Feb. 14, Toronto police estimated 350,000 demonstrators filled the city's north end, while Vancouver police estimated 50,000 answered Iran's exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi's call, and police said protests happen weekly driven by global polarization.
- Police in Montreal, Calgary and Ottawa reported well-attended rallies opposing Iran's crackdowns, with social media and diaspora-led protests fueling the surge, Ramos said.
- Aerial photos showed a kilometre-long stretch of Yonge Street packed with protesters marching shoulder to shoulder, while Toronto police reported only one man arrested for assault at the larger rally.
- In Vancouver, the number of protests increased by 75 per cent between Jan. 2025–Jan. 2026, officers doing overtime and coming in on days off increased, and the Canadian Association of Police Chiefs called the demand "unsustainable."
- Another rally is set to take place Saturday in Richmond Hill, Ont., and Salar Gholami said more protests are planned as Calgary saw a 300 per cent increase, reflecting ongoing trends.
