PM Modi meets Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit.
Escalating tensions between Iran and the United States have persisted since the February assassination of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, marking the leaders' first in-person meeting since the conflict began.
Military exchanges intensified hours before the meeting: the United States targeted Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, while Iran retaliated against American bases in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
Modi reiterated India's commitment to peace, underlining the need for 'safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce,' while thanking Pezeshkian for ensuring the safety of Indian nationals in Iran.
The 10-member SCO is marking 25 years of the organization, with Modi expected to hold further bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov.
