Plans for two asylum seeker centers in Amersfoort have been shelved for the time being. The mayor and aldermen say they believe local residents, advocacy groups, and the city council haven't been heard enough.

The plan to build two new asylum seekers' centers in Amersfoort has been shelved for the time being. The municipal executive acknowledges that local residents and advocacy groups were not sufficiently involved. "In retrospect, this should have been done sooner and more broadly. The executive apologizes for this," it stated in a letter to the city council.

Amersfoort is temporarily withdrawing the proposed asylum seekers' center locations in Vathorst and Schothorst. The mayor and aldermen have written to the city council stating that they will prepare a new decision. Whether the two locations will still be designated is currently unclear.
