Plane slides off runway at Halifax airport during winter storm
The plane slid off the runway amid zero visibility and heavy snow, stranding passengers for 2½ hours before evacuation, while the runway closure delayed other flights, officials said.
- On Wednesday night a Porter Airlines flight from Toronto slid into snow after landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, leaving passengers aboard for two hours while the runway stayed closed Thursday morning.
- Samuel Gaboury said, `'Visibility was zero, was really, really bad. & You could barely see like a feet in front of you,'` linking weather to the aircraft becoming disabled at the runway end at Halifax airport.
- Ground crews plowed a route and tried unsuccessfully to tow the disabled aircraft, while an initial effort to bring boarding stairs failed due to instability before passengers disembarked and were bused to the terminal.
- Some flights faced delays or cancellations amid the storm, Tiffany Chase, airport authority spokesperson, said no significant injuries were reported despite overnight runway blockage disrupting airport operations and scheduling.
- Gaboury said passengers did not seem overly worried and, as far as he knew, everyone was safe, but he was surprised the plane was allowed to land and said `I think it should have been delayed or cancelled, to be honest with you.
