- Pittsburg Police Chief Phil Galer acknowledged a "serious failure" after Martin smuggled a firearm past two searches by the same officer, one during arrest and one at the booking facility.
- Martin requested water from Sanchez, then attacked him without warning, striking the officer repeatedly with the firearm; during the struggle, a bullet passed through Martin's thigh and into Sanchez's abdomen below his body armor.
- Despite his gunshot wound, Sanchez "did not stop fighting," enabling responding officers to disarm Martin; prosecutors charged Martin with attempted murder and he remains detained on $450,000 bail.
