Pistons’ Jalen Duren Sign-and-Trade Scenario Gets Major Update
Detroit also inserted an uncommon monthly weight clause as the restricted free agent weighs a $9.6 million qualifying offer before the Oct. 1 deadline.
On Monday, September 21, the Detroit Pistons raised their contract offer to restricted free-agent center Jalen Duren to five years and $200 million, seeking to finalize a deal before training camp opens next week.
The proposed contract includes an uncommon weight clause requiring monthly weigh-ins, which reportedly surprised Duren and his representation during negotiations. The Pistons prefer him to play lighter following his playoff struggles.
Facing an October 1 deadline, Duren can accept a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer that would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, providing leverage against the Pistons' demands.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Pistons officials remain "completely adamant" against facilitating a sign-and-trade, despite reported interest from the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee in acquiring Duren.
Resolution is critical for the Pistons, who finished 60-22 last season and aim to maximize their competitive window with core player Cade Cunningham before the regular season begins October 20.
