Philpot closes in on Canadian receiving record as Alouettes host Bombers
Philpot leads the CFL with 1,528 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, putting Terry Evanshen’s 1967 mark within reach.
Montreal Alouettes wideout Tyson Philpot needs 135 receiving yards to surpass Terry Evanshen's single-season Canadian mark of 1,662, entering Saturday night's matchup against the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
This year, the 26-year-old from Delta, B.C., leads the CFL with 1,528 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, having stayed healthy for all 14 games—nearly double his previous career high.
Receivers coach Michael Lionello credits Philpot's genetics for his league-leading 672 yards after the catch—169 more than any other player—while head coach Jason Maas said, "He's just grown and grown and grown."
Montreal can clinch first place in the East Division with a victory Saturday if the Toronto Argonauts lose to the B.C. Lions, while Winnipeg battles for West Division playoff positioning.
Philpot remains focused on the game despite the historical stakes, stating, "Any time I look up any kind of record or anything, his name is always at the top," regarding Evanshen's 14-year Hall of Fame career.
