CFL suspends Edmonton Elk Darien Newell for nine games for second doping violation
The ruling follows a second positive test for cardarine and drostanolone, and league policy calls for a nine-game ban after repeat violations.
An independent arbitrator dismissed Edmonton Elks defensive lineman Darien Newell's appeal on Tuesday, upholding a nine-game suspension from the Canadian Football League for testing positive for banned substances cardarine and drostanolone.
Newell's first violation occurred in 2025 after testing positive for nine substances at the CFL combine, resulting in a two-game suspension before he signed with the Elks on May 4, 2026.
The six-foot-two, 289-pound Brampton, Ont., native appeared in 37 games at Queen, registering 92 total tackles, 18 sacks, and a forced fumble as a two-time first-team Sports All-Canadian.
Under the Doping Control Program, Newell must participate in remedial education and clinical assessment; a third positive test results in a one-year suspension with lifetime ban for a fourth.
All players remain subject to mandatory drug testing following policy violations, as the Canadian Football League continues to enforce these protocols to maintain competitive integrity.
