Mets' Game vs. Phillies Moved up for Air Quality Concerns
Smoke from Canadian wildfires prompted the Phillies to move the game up one hour as officials warned the air could worsen later.
On Thursday, July 16, the Philadelphia Phillies moved their game against the New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park up one hour to 6:10 p.m. due to air quality concerns from wildfire smoke.
A Code Red Air Quality Alert remains in effect for the Philadelphia region until midnight as wildfire smoke from Canada and northern Minnesota creates "unhealthy" conditions forecast to persist throughout the night.
Mets interim manager Andy Green said the team limited outside exposure, noting, "I don't think you can predict this kind of thing," as players were encouraged to complete pregame workouts inside to minimize smoke inhalation risks.
Elsewhere, Major League Soccer's Fire postponed their Thursday game in Chicago after air quality hit 597, while MLB typically only considers postponements if the Air Quality Index surpasses 200, considered an "increased" health risk.
The Phillies and Mets are scheduled to continue their three-game series on Saturday and Sunday; officials deemed Thursday's game safe to play, though teams remain focused on navigating the series safely amid ongoing air quality concerns.
