Philippines flooding displaces thousands, two missing
METRO MANILA, PHILIPPINES, JUL 22 – Torrential monsoon rains caused the Marikina River to overflow, forcing evacuations of over 48,000 residents and leaving at least two people missing, officials said.
- A senior woman and her driver were carried away by floodwaters while crossing a bridge over a rising creek in Caloocan, and their vehicle was retrieved last night.
- The flooding followed torrential rains that caused the Marikina River to burst its banks, halting life in Manila and surrounding provinces on Tuesday.
- Over 23,000 residents residing near the river and an additional 25,000 individuals from Quezon and Caloocan cities were relocated to schools and community centers as floodwaters began to subside.
- According to John Paul Nietes, who serves as an assistant supervisor at the emergency operations centre, the search efforts are ongoing, but the two missing individuals have yet to be located as of today.
- The floods highlight annual vulnerability due to lack of preparedness and increasingly powerful storms worsened by climate change, which hit the Philippines about 20 times a year.
