Pfizer agrees to lower prescription drug costs for Medicaid in a deal with Trump

Pfizer will reduce Medicaid drug prices by matching the lowest global rates and invest $70 billion in U.S. manufacturing and research, securing a three-year tariff exemption.

  • At a White House event on Sept. 30, Pfizer and the administration revealed a deal to lower the cost of some U.S. prescription drugs, announced by President Donald Trump and Albert Bourla, Pfizer Chairman and CEO.
  • Reviving a prior policy, the administration reinstated Most Favored Nation policy and warned of a 100% tariff on branded pharmaceutical importers unless they build U.S. plants.
  • Pfizer pledged a $70 billion investment in U.S. research and manufacturing, will sell some drugs at Most-Favored-Nation pricing with savings up to 85%, and the White House unveiled the TrumpRX website.
  • Medicaid, which covers more than 70 million people, will receive MFN pricing while new Medicaid prices launching in 2026 exclude Medicare, which spends more on drugs.
  • Investors cheered while experts warned that Pfizer shares rose more than 6%, lifting Eli Lilly, Merck, Amgen, AbbVie and GSK, but MFN directives could prompt higher prices abroad.
