- On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi threatened a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against African Democratic Congress chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo for alleged false statements made on Channels TV.
- Okonkwo alleged on Channels TV that Obi demanded N10 million bribes from House of Representatives aspirants and personally compiled candidate lists at the Johnwood Hotel to defraud them.
- Obunike Ohaegbu, the House of Representatives aspirant Okonkwo cited, denied the accusations, stating he never accused the NDC South-east caucus of bribery and did not claim Obi compiled candidate lists.
- Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN, of Madiba Chambers, demanded Okonkwo retract the statements and publish an apology within 7 days, requesting N5 billion in damages and threatening further legal action.
- Previously allies in the Labour Party and African Democratic Congress, Obi and Okonkwo have since parted ways; Okonkwo currently supports Atiku Abubakar, the ADC's 2027 presidential flagbearer.
