Pentagon Says US Drone Production Still Trails Ukraine by Wide Margin

- The Pentagon instituted stricter requirements mandating military drones contain no banned parts like Chinese-made brushless motors or battery packs. A revised supply chain framework released July 23 aims for a "wholly domestic" small unmanned aircraft system supply chain.
- While Ukraine will produce between six and seven million attack drones this year, the Pentagon's $1.1 billion program will have ordered under 200,000 drones cumulatively by February. Metz noted that scaling capacity from zero is an "increasingly difficult thing."
- To qualify for future orders, six Ukrainian companies must localize production in the United States, with many entering joint ventures for the upcoming "Gauntlet II" test at Fort Carson, Colorado. These partnerships aim to convert battlefield expertise into American manufacturing capacity.
