Malaysian Rapper Namewee Charged with Drug Offences; Denies Involvement in Taiwanese Influencer's Death
Wee was charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after testing positive for multiple substances and facing up to five years in jail and nine strokes of the cane.
- On Oct 22, Wee Meng Chee, known as Namewee, was arrested at a Kuala Lumpur hotel and charged on October 24 after media linked him to the room where Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh was found dead.
 - Police said a sweep of the hotel room found nine blue pills suspected to be Ecstasy weighing around 5.12 grams, and urine screening results showed amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC.
 - At the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates Court on Oct 24, Wee faced two Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 charges, pleaded not guilty, was released on bail of 8,000 ringgit , and faces up to five years' jail and nine strokes for possession, and two years for use.
 - On Nov 2, Wee posted on Instagram denying involvement and criticized false reports, saying he was `really pissed off` and that the ambulance took nearly an hour to arrive.
 - Wee Meng Chee, known for satirical, controversial music, first rose to fame in 2007 with a viral rap parody and has faced legal trouble including a 2014 court charge over a 2009 video, with the next hearing set for December 18.
