Paul George Scores 38 Points in a Losing Debut with the Celtics
George scored 38 points in his Boston debut, but Detroit erased a 22-point deficit for the biggest comeback in a season opener since 1997.
On Tuesday, Paul George scored 38 points in his Boston Celtics debut, the most by any Celtic in a first game, though Boston suffered a 121-113 collapse against the Detroit Pistons.
Acquired from the Sixers last summer for 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown, the 36-year-old George plays his 17th season and felt encouraged by his health despite the defeat.
Boston led by 22 points before a 23-0 Pistons run flipped the game, while Jayson Tatum struggled, missing 17 of 23 shots despite recording 13 points and 11 assists.
"Just his comfort level," reigning NBA Coach of the Year Joe Mazzulla said of George, who shot 12 of 21 and made 7 of 12 3-pointers in 31 minutes.
George's 38 points rank fifth-most in an NBA debut, trailing Kyrie Irving's 50-point record, as the Celtics became the fifth team in 30 seasons to lose after leading by 22.
