Patients of Philadelphia Dentist Urged to Test for HIV and Hepatitis, Smiles at Rittenhouse Square Closed
Officials said the risk is low and no infections have been confirmed as patients are urged to seek bloodborne pathogen testing.
The Philadelphia Health Department urges patients who visited Smiles at Rittenhouse Square between April 2025 and May 2026 to seek testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV following the suspension of dentist Kirti Chopra's license.
State investigators suspended Chopra's license last week after a March 25 inspection revealed the practice reused single-use anesthetic vials and saline bags while failing to properly sterilize critical dental instruments.
While the City Health Department believes the infection risk is low and confirms no known transmissions, officials have established a hotline at 215-685-5488 and are mailing notification letters to affected patients.
The clinic at 255 South 17th Street remains closed until inspectors verify that all unsafe practices are remedied, though Chopra issued a statement noting she is cooperating with public health officials.
Further regulatory action continues as the Pennsylvania Department of State conducts a separate investigation into the clinic, leaving the facility's future operations uncertain until Chopra satisfies all safety and licensing requirements.
