Panama on Tuesday became the latest Central American country to declare a state of emergency due to the El Nino phenomenon, following Honduras and El Salvador.
These two Central American countries are taking exceptional administrative measures to cope with extreme weather conditions.
In recent months, El Niño has caused a 25% increase in rainfall in the Caribbean. Already in the Pacific it has caused a 60% reduction in rainfall.
The Government of Panama declared on Tuesday the state of national emergency to combat the effects related to the climate phenomenon of El Niño, which in the Central American country has affected with excessive rains in some areas and drought in others, a period of rainfall deficit that could extend until March 2027, also affected the interoceanic canal.
