Palestinian man shot by Israeli troops while trying to cross into Israel for work dies of wounds
Palestinian health officials said Mahmoud Al-Amleh was the 17th person killed while trying to cross the barrier since Oct. 7, 2023.
On Monday, 32-year-old Mahmoud Al-Amleh died of wounds after Israeli soldiers shot him Sunday near Beit Ula in the West Bank, The Ramallah-based Health Ministry reported.
Israel suspended most work permits following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, but struggling West Bank economic conditions have driven many Palestinians to attempt illegal crossings seeking employment.
Hamdan Al-Amleh told The Associated Press his cousin was part of a group of workers, while the Israeli military confirmed firing, citing standard apprehension procedures after suspects allegedly damaged the barrier.
This incident marks the second time in less than a week that a Palestinian has been killed by Israeli troops while attempting to cross the barrier for work.
According to OCHA, 17 Palestinians have been killed and over 290 injured at the barrier since Oct. 7, 2023, with at least 47 Palestinians killed in the West Bank this year as of May 11.
