Pakistan approves flights by Taiwanese airlines after reported restrictions
The move forced China Airlines and Eva Air to reroute flights, adding hours and fuel costs, Bloomberg reported.
On Wednesday, Pakistan barred Taiwanese airlines from using its airspace to support Beijing's One-China policy, becoming the first country to take such a step, Bloomberg reported.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told Bloomberg News the aviation division follows the One-China policy, stating "Only mainland China is allowed." Pakistan severed official relations with Taiwan in 1951 to prioritize closer ties with China.
China Airlines Ltd and Eva Airways Corp began rerouting flights on October 25, adding hours and fuel costs to journeys between Asia and Europe; at least a dozen flights have since used Russian airspace, according to Flightradar24 data.
Pakistan's restrictions are stricter than those in mainland China, which allows Taiwanese carriers to fly over its territory; China Airlines and Eva Air are now routing aircraft over other parts of South Asia and the Middle East.
The rerouting comes as Pakistan and China strengthen ties under President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative, with Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi previously describing the nations as "iron-clad friends and all-weather strategic cooperative partners.
