‘Series of Bad Judgments’: 2 Friends Lose Licences After Both Fail Roadside Breath Tests on B.C. Highway
Both drivers failed breath tests and lost their vehicles after police stopped them on Highway 5, with one also ticketed for speeding.
- On Sept. 19, a BCHP officer stopped a Toyota Matrix on Highway 5 near Heffley Creek for travelling 130 km/h in a 100 zone, discovering the 33-year-old Savona driver was impaired.
- The Savona driver explained she was attempting to catch up to her friend, who was driving a Jeep Liberty and had stopped ahead, leading the officer to demand a breath sample from that 29-year-old Kamloops woman.
- Breath samples from both drivers showed "Fail," as the BCHP stated the pair had been driving home separately after "a day of fun in the sun" and allegedly drinking too much.
- Penalties for the two women include 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions and 30-day vehicle impoundments, with about $1,400 in total fees and a $138 speeding ticket for the Savona driver.
- Sgt. Michael McLaughlin with BCHP stated that this situation, like most impaired driving incidents, was preventable at many stages, urging drivers to plan ahead to avoid such dangerous choices.
