'Packed to the brim': Trump says 45K guests attend Great American State Fair rally
Fox News hosts on Sunday insisted that pictures showing sparse attendance at the Great American State Fair did not tell the full story. Correspondents claimed the energy was greater than visual records suggested.
President Donald Trump claimed at least 45,000 people attended the kickoff rally for the Freedom 250 event on Wednesday. However, NBC News reported attendance figures were "nowhere near" that total, with many attendees appearing to have come only to see the president speak.
The Associated Press captured images Saturday showing large stretches of the National Mall fairgrounds sitting mostly empty. One striking photo depicts musician Jason Hershey performing before rows of empty seats, with seemingly only two people in attendance.
Early Monday, Trump took to Truth Social to defend the event, asking if others could have done a "fantastic job" building and operating the fair. He insisted it was "packed with happy people," despite social media mockery showing a lack of visitors.
Organizers are promoting upcoming July 4 festivities including fireworks on the National Mall as the 250th anniversary celebration continues. The fair remains open until July 10, though technical difficulties and low turnout have marred the kickoff.
