Overmars resigns as Royal Antwerp sports director due to health issues
Marc Overmars said his energy is completely depleted and that doctors warned of a high risk of a bad outcome if he kept working.
On Wednesday, Marc Overmars resigned as sporting director of Royal Antwerp, citing accumulated stress and fatigue in a letter to supporters published that day.
Overmars joined the Belgian club in 2022 after spending nearly a decade at Ajax, where the former Netherlands, Arsenal, and Barcelona winger began his playing career.
"My energy is now completely depleted," Overmars wrote, adding that doctors warned of a "very high risk of things ending badly" if he did not stop working.
Previously, Overmars left the Dutch club Ajax after he was found to have sent inappropriate messages to female colleagues; he apologized for his behavior at the time.
The decision marks a complete halt to Overmars' professional soccer activities for the time being, concluding his tenure at Royal Antwerp as he focuses on recovery.
