Over half a million rally in Istanbul for Palestine on New Year’s day
An estimated 500,000 people joined the rally organized by more than 400 civil society groups, rejecting the ceasefire and calling for sustained pressure to end violence in Gaza.
- On Thursday, thousands marched through Istanbul in support of Gaza, with an estimated 520,000 people gathering at Galata Bridge.
- Organisers said the event was led by the Humanity Alliance and National Will Platform, backed by more than 400 civil society organisations; a similar demonstration last year was organised by Bilal Erdogan, youngest son of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
- Before dawn, worshippers gathered at Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, Sultanahmet, Fatih Mosque, Suleymaniye Mosque, and Eminonu New Mosque for prayers, calling to end what they described as a genocide in Gaza.
- After prayers, demonstrators marched to Galata Bridge joined by ministers and senior officials, with performances by Maher Zain, Lebanese-Swedish singer, and unveiling of a Hanzala banner.
- President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who chairs the board of the Ilim Yayma Foundation, said `We are praying that 2026 will bring goodness for our entire nation and for the oppressed Palestinians` amid a fragile October 10 ceasefire and more than 400 Palestinians killed.
