- According to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, at least 3,600 individuals between the ages of 12 and 18 underwent gender transition surgeries in the US between 2016 and 2020. Most patients were between 19 and 30 years old.
- Breast and chest surgeries were the most common gender transition procedures performed on individuals aged 12 to 18, accounting for 87.4% of surgeries. Genital surgeries were performed on 11.0% of patients in the same age group.
- The study claims that gender transition surgeries are associated with improved quality of life, decreased depression, and anxiety. However, detransitioners and concerns about long-term effects have led nearly two dozen states to prohibit some or all types of gender transition surgeries on minors.
