Over 20 states sue Trump administration over frozen after-school and summer program funds
NORTH CAROLINA, JUL 15 – The lawsuit claims the freeze violates federal law and threatens nearly 1,000 educator jobs in North Carolina, impacting rural districts heavily reliant on $165 million in federal grants.
- On July 14, a coalition of states filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Rhode Island, requiring the Trump Administration to release funds scheduled for July 1.
- The Trump Administration froze the $6.8 billion in education funds approved by Congress, notifying states on June 30 that grants due July 1 would not be issued.
- According to North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson, the freeze affects mental health, STEM and English-learning programs, and could lead to about 1,000 teacher and staff layoffs.
- Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said `This is not about Democrat or Republican – these funds were appropriated by Congress for the education of Kentucky’s children, and it’s my job to ensure we get them`, noting that $96 million in federal education funds are at risk.
