An environmental defender fighting against the depredation of the Amazon was shot down in the Peruvian jungle, the authorities announced on Sunday 27 July. Attacks on environmental defenders have increased in recent years in the Amazonian regions of Peru, where indigenous peoples are confronted with the presence of drug traffickers and illegal mining.
Hipolito Quispehuaman was killed on Saturday 26 July in the Madre de Dios region, in retaliation for his work in this particularly biodiversity-rich area.
