Ottawa proposes $164M in whale protection funding for waters off B.C. coast
Ottawa has proposed spending about $164 million over five years to protect whales and their habitat off British Columbia's coast.
The funding aims to reduce underwater vessel noise by up to 50% in the Salish Sea through collaboration with BC Ferries.
Funds will support whale protection measures including vessel speed restrictions and fisheries management, with programs led by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority working with industry partners.
This initiative responds to concerns about increased marine traffic following a recent whale collision incident in Vancouver waters.
