Oregon man accused of killing women and dumping their bodies is arraigned on fifth murder charge
Families of the victims were present as Calhoun entered a not-guilty plea and now faces five second-degree murder counts and four abuse charges.
Jesse Calhoun was arraigned Wednesday in Portland on a fifth second-degree murder charge in the death of 22-year-old Ashley Real, with his defense entering a not-guilty plea.
Calhoun faced prior indictments in 2024 and 2025 for the deaths of Kristin Smith, 22; Charity Perry, 24; Bridget Webster, 31; and Joanna Speaks, 32, with bodies discovered across a roughly 100-mile radius in Oregon and Washington.
Victims' families attended the hearing; Jose Real, father of Ashley Real, recalled memories while Melissa Smith, mother of Kristin Smith, stated, "We've all experienced the worst thing that could ever happen to you."
Calhoun remains held at the Multnomah County Detention Center after Gov. Tina Kotek revoked his commutation in 2023, returning him to prison to finish a four-year term for prior offenses.
No trial date has been set for the five murder and four abuse-of-a-corpse counts; the discovery of victims' bodies in early 2023 sparked regional concern about a serial killer targeting young women.
