Oprah Winfrey Shocks Keke Palmer by Revealing Her Real Name
Winfrey said her birth certificate listed Orpah, and a spelling mix-up turned the Bible name into Oprah.
Entertainment mogul Oprah Winfrey revealed to Keke Palmer that her birth certificate lists her name as "Orpah," derived from the Bible's Ruth.
Aunt Ida originally chose the name from the Bible, but because no one in her home knew how to spell it, Winfrey unknowingly lived with the misspelled "Oprah" until age 20.
Winfrey noted she is not the only celebrity using a stage name, pointing out that Palmer also goes by a moniker different from her government name.
Other stars have similarly adjusted their names; Tina Fey is actually named Elizabeth, and Cher discovered in the late '70s she was registered as "Cheryl."
The talk show host has been candid about this origin story since 1983, maintaining transparency regarding the name mix-up for decades.
Oprah Winfrey (72) has gone through life as Oprah her entire career, but that is not how the American presenter and media mogul appears on her birth certificate. Her official first name is actually Orpah. In the podcast ‘Baby, This Is Keke Palmer’ she explained how a simple slip of the tongue eventually became her famous name.
