Residents in Parts of Northern Ontario Ordered Out because of Growing Forest Fires
Ontario Provincial Police said 128 active fires have forced evacuations and road closures as crews help residents move to shelter in Thunder Bay.
On Tuesday, Ontario Provincial Police ordered mandatory evacuations for Armstrong, Whitesand First Nation, and Collins First Nation, directing residents south to Thunder Bay.
Ontario forest fire officials are responding to 160 active wildland fires, with 128 burning in the northwest region as extreme heat compounds the crisis.
Fire-Related road closures impact Highway 11 between Highway 633 and Highway 623, while Diane Laybourne, secretary of the Armstrong Local Services Board, described orange clouds reflecting the fire.
Ignace CAO Aaron Gullins placed the town on standby, though wind shifts are pushing the fire approximately 25 kilometres away, and the City of Thunder Bay stated there is "no immediate threat."
Wabakimi Provincial Park will remain closed until July 20 due to extreme fire conditions, and authorities have enacted fire bans for Thunder Bay, Dryden, Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, and Nolalu.
