In the 1980s, Germany's defence strategy was increasingly geared towards interoperability. Due to the very high development costs of new aircraft, the joint initiative of a medium-sized helicopter was born, which can be used not only for the transport of persons and materials, but also for military rescue missions, operations by special forces, as well as for assistance in emergencies and disasters by various NATO partners.
