OpenAI to begin testing ads on ChatGPT in the U.S.

OpenAI will test clearly labeled ads in ChatGPT’s free and $8 Go tiers for U.S. adults, keeping premium tiers ad-free and promising no influence on AI responses.

  • On Friday, OpenAI announced it will begin testing ads inside ChatGPT in the United States in the coming weeks on the free and $8-per-month ChatGPT Go tiers.
  • Facing rising costs, OpenAI is embracing advertising to diversify revenue ahead of a potential initial public offering, after hiring Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications, and Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer, last year.
  • Ads will appear at the bottom of answers, be labeled "Sponsored" and separated from responses, with personalization on by default and users able to opt out, dismiss ads, and clear ad-related data, OpenAI said.
  • Paid subscribers on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans will remain ad-free, and ads will be excluded for users under 18 and near sensitive topics, OpenAI said.
  • As the company seeks revenue, observers note that OpenAI's move to test ads in ChatGPT helps fund infrastructure spending and aligns it with rivals like Google and Meta, raising user trust concerns.
