OpenAI Launches Legal-Focused AI Platform, Escalating Race for Law Firm Users
The offering adds legal-case search, custom model tweaks, and plugins for Thomson Reuters, iManage, and DeepJudge.
- On Thursday, OpenAI released Astra for Law, a version of its GPT-6 Astra model designed for legal professionals targeting the AmLaw 200 largest American law firms.
- Following the recent release of ChatGPT for Financial Services last week, OpenAI is expanding into professional sectors while competing with Anthropic and Google in the legal AI market.
- Jason Boehmig, who leads legal product at OpenAI, said the model provides "longer responses" grounded in "actual case law." Sherwin Wu noted these tweaks reduce hallucinations and improve sound legal reasoning.
- Selected firms including Wachtell Lipton and Latham and Watkins gain initial access through a "Trusted Access" program, while legal tech vendors like Harvey and Legora integrate the platform.
- An application programming interface for legal tech vendors is expected soon, with OpenAI planning to incorporate a citations feature mirroring its recent financial services offering.
