OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI executive Karpathy joins Anthropic
Karpathy will build a team using Claude to speed pretraining research as Anthropic competes more aggressively with OpenAI for top AI talent.
- On Tuesday, AI researcher Andrej Karpathy announced he joined Anthropic, strengthening the Claude maker as it competes with OpenAI in the intensifying AI race.
- Karpathy helped launch OpenAI as a founding research scientist before leading computer vision for Tesla Autopilot, then left in 2022 and started the AI-centered education startup Eureka Labs.
- Reporting to pretraining lead Nick Joseph, Karpathy will build a team using Claude to accelerate pretraining research, which involves large-scale training runs providing models core knowledge and capabilities.
- Tapping Karpathy signals Anthropic's commitment to AI-assisted development over pure compute power as it intensifies rivalry with OpenAI. "I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative," Karpathy wrote.
- Separately, Anthropic hired cybersecurity veteran Chris Rohlf to join its frontier red team, which stress-tests advanced models. Rohlf previously worked at Meta and Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
